Under Medicare Part A, hospice care is designed primarily for beneficiaries who:

Are terminally ill and elect comfort-focused, palliative care rather than curative treatment — Medicare Part A hospice coverage is for beneficiaries with a terminal illness who elect palliative, comfort-focused care instead of curative treatment. Hospice includes nursing and physician services, pain and symptom management, medications related to the terminal illness, home health aide services, and bereavement counseling, delivered primarily in the home. Choosing hospice reflects a shift in the goal of care from cure to comfort, which is the defining feature of the hospice benefit. Hospice is an election, not merely a diagnosis: the beneficiary must choose comfort-focused care and forgo curative treatment for the terminal illness. The Part A hospice benefit then covers a coordinated bundle of services including nursing, physician, counseling, medications for symptom control, and respite care for caregivers.

National insurance concept

Under Medicare Part A, hospice care for a terminally ill beneficiary:

Is a covered Part A benefit providing pain management and supportive care, with modest copays for drugs and respite care — Medicare Part A covers hospice care for beneficiaries certified as terminally ill (a prognosis of six months or less). The hospice benefit provides pain and symptom management, nursing, counseling, and supportive services, with small copays for outpatient drugs and respite care. Electing hospice means choosing comfort-oriented care for the terminal illness; there is no requirement to exhaust curative treatment first, and hospice is available to Medicare beneficiaries of any age. Hospice is elected, not mandated, for the terminal illness itself.
