When survivor benefits stop for a widow(er) until a later qualifying age — The blackout period in Social Security is the interval during which a surviving spouse loses survivor benefits, typically from when the youngest child reaches age 16 until the surviving spouse turns age 60, or age 50 if disabled. While a widow or widower caring for a child under 16 receives benefits, those benefits stop once the child passes 16, leaving a gap until the survivor becomes eligible again. Currently insured status is the more easily reached standard, and it matters for survivor benefits; full insurance is needed for retirement benefits. Credits are earned through covered work and self-employment.
